Velux Windows and Sliding Doors, your questions answered
Considering skylights, Velux windows, or sliding doors as part of your home renovations? Here are some popular questions we get asked.
Are Velux windows insulated?
Yes, all Velux windows provided by Avanti are insulated to keep the heat in and the rain and other weather elements out. The degree to which a Velux window is insulated can vary depending on the materials that are used to make them. At Avanti, we only provide the highest quality of Velux windows whether we are involved in commercial building renovations or home renovations. While you can buy Velux windows that aren’t insulated, we don’t recommend them.
What materials are Velux windows made from?
Velux windows are made from a range of materials including polyurethane, polyester, and acrylic. Polyurethane is the most common material used in Velux windows and is an excellent insulator.
This material can also help to reduce heat transfer by up to 99%. Polyester is not as good as polyurethane but still offers some insulation properties. Acrylic, on the other hand, offers no insulation properties at all so it should be avoided if possible.
Should I consider Velux windows or sliding doors for my home renovation?
House renovations - If you are considering a house renovation then both options are a great choice, but it will depend on the type of home renovation you are considering, and the layout of the living space.
Barn conversions - If you are considering a barn conversion then using Velux windows and sliding doors are great ways to let in as much light as possible while adding style to the surroundings.
Garage conversions - The same applies to garage conversions since garage spaces are typically very dark and restricted in terms of the amount of light that can enter the room.
You might, however, have restrictions such as a lack of space for sliding doors or, especially with a garage, no roof area to install Velux windows.
Converting a loft space - Loft conversions, however, are clearly suitable for Velux windows and not sliding doors.
Ultimately, both options are great, but it will depend on your circumstances. At Avanti, we work with customers who are considering a home renovation to make sure they understand the pros and cons of the different options.
Which one lets in the most light? Sliding doors or Velux windows?
There’s no clear winner as it depends on where they are positioned and other factors such as the time of day. On a sunny day, a Velux window can let in a lot of light when the sun is over the top of the roof while south-facing sliding doors can provide much more light throughout the day.
It depends on the window size, the amount of natural light in the room and what you are trying to achieve.
Do Velux windows keep out external noise?
Yes, they do. In fact, Velux windows are very good at keeping out external noises!
Can the glass in Velux windows be replaced?
Yes, it can, although it depends on the window that’s being installed. Velux windows very rarely need to have the glass replaced but if you have any doubts or questions about glass replacement, talk to one of our advisors.
What's the life span for Velux windows?
There is no exact figure for this and it can vary depending on the environment and how well they are looked after. Some customers have reported that their windows have lasted for well over 20 years and the duration can also depend on the quality of the materials used.
